Luxury & Consumer Goods: US Department stores: after soft holidays, sharp rebound in January thanks to markdowns

US department store chains have reported January same-store sales well above expectations, showing 9.3% average sales growth after 4.2% growth in December and +1.1% in November. Department store chains Nordstrom (high-end) and Macy’s (mid-range) both posted SSSG that topped analysts’ expectations thanks to new merchandise and markdowns that have attracted post-holiday shoppers.
